Career Prospects

Graduates of the Department of Geography have a broad and interesting range of career options and prospects in Greece, Europe and elsewhere.

The comprehensiveness of knowledge offered in the Curriculum of the Department of Geography guarantees that graduates can deal professionally with the analysis and management of a wide variety of space-related issues, contribute to the teaching of Geography courses in primary, secondary and post-secondary education, as well as engage in research.

Professionally, geographers deal with issues generally related to the spatial analysis and management, such as:

  • cartographic studies

  • management and development of G.I.S. systems and geographic data

  • development, management and implementation of geographical databases

  • spatial analysis of phenomena and processes

  • urban, regional and rural analysis and development studies

  • urban and regional planning studies

  • local development programs and studies

  • environmental, demographic, social, economic studies

  • natural resource availability and management studies

  • tourism analysis and development studies

  • locational studies for companies, industrial plants, technology parks, services, public utility facilities, social infrastructure, etc.

  • feasibility studies and business plans

  • market research

  • policy making on environmental, social, economic, international etc. relations

Teaching

Teaching Geography in primary, secondary and post-secondary education concerns the systematic presentation of the total range of knowledge as well as topics of contemporary Geography.

Research

Research in Geography covers all issues that directly or indirectly concern the interaction of humans and space over time - from technical and technological issues of electronic spatial analysis to philosophical issues of value systems that determine how space is perceived and used.

Services

Geographers can work in public, private and social services in the above mentioned areas. Examples include:

  • Ministries and all relevant services

Professional certification

In order to achieve the professional registration of geographers, the Professional Registration Committee of the Department of Geography formulated the draft of the Presidential Decree which was officially published in the Government Gazette (PD 147, FEK 124, 4/6/2002). According to this presidential decree (PD), Geography graduates can be employed:

  • In private sector workplaces:

    • for carrying out development, spatial, urban, tourist and cartographic studies

    • for the organization and management of geographical information and the application of remote sensing methods and Geographic Information Systems

    • as business consultants in matters concerning the location and/or relocation of activities, in the evaluation/ utilization of incentives for regional development and decentralization, in market research, in tourism development, etc.

    • for the production of cartographic, tourist and other geographical information

    • for the management of natural resources and for carrying out studies of environmental protection and environmental impact

    • for carrying out physical geographical studies

  • In research institutes dealing with the study of space and people

  • In bodies of the Greek Public Administration and the European Union their specialty areas.

  • In international and non-governmental organizations.

  • In education, as well as in the training of those involved in geographical education.

The recent incorporation of Geographers in the Field of Public Teachers (PE04.05: “Teachers of Natural Sciences and especially Geologists”) allows them to participate in the ASEP (Supreme Staff Selection Board) competition and to be hired as permanent teaching staff in Secondary Education.

Also, since 2008-2009, for the first time, graduates of the Departments of Geography in Greece have been given the opportunity to apply for inclusion in the lists of substitute and and hourly teachers, in the special branch PE04.05 (“Teachers of Natural Sciences and especially Geologists” ) of the Greek State.

The role of the Liaison Office of the University of the Aegean is also important in the general effort of the graduates to seek either professional opportunities or prospects to continue their studies at the postgraduate level. The activities of the Liaison Office include:

  • informing private and public bodies about the studies in the Department of Geography and the profile of the graduate geographers

  • providing information to anyone interested in studying in the Department of Geography - by phone, e-mail, and through its website on the Internet

  • monitoring of the daily press regarding jobs, postgraduates, scholarships and competition announcements of public or private bodies

  • registration of the graduates of the University departments in a database and frequent contact with them through periodical publications of the Office

  • maintaining a database of graduate CVs and circulating them to interested employers

  • publication of advisory brochures for: writing a CV, selection interviews, writing a cover letter and production of promotional material for the University of the Aegean and its Departments

  • conducting pilot research with companies and developing contacts with them to find jobs and internships

  • locating information for postgraduate studies

  • outsourcing information of the University Departments on the trends and requirements of the labour market in relation to the profile of the graduates

  • maintaining and daily updating of the Office website for the timely provision of information

The Alumni Committee of the Department of Geography, using the “Alumni Newsletter” ensures the continuous and uninterrupted communication of the Department with its graduates and information on employment and scientific issues.
