Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students will have:

  • familiarization with the basics concepts and definitions of Urban Geography;
  • understanding of Urban Geography objectives, theories, policies and practices;
  • analyzing of a variety of urban systems and the social forces that shape these systems;
  • improved their capacity to translate this knowledge into applied analysis;
  •  
    ability to interpret the structure of the city in different spaces and times;
  •  
    ability to evaluate available evidence on urban forms and processes;
  •  
    identification of various approaches to urban geographical phenomena;
  •  
    ability to integrate knowledge with critical thinking skills. Be able to build a critical approach of contemporary urban (social, ecological, cultural, economic) phenomena;

    basic principles learning for the composition of a trans-disciplinary project of urban space;

(3) Syllabus

This course introduces students to some of the key themes, concepts and debates characterising Urban Geography. Among the topics covered initially are conceptualisations of the urban condition, human geography debates and theories of urbanisation. The course then focuses on urban geographies of the European and American cities.

 

Definitions : System of cities and structure of the city (urban models), Land use and Land occupation, Urbanisation and Suburbanisation. Interactions between urban phenomena and environment in several cities and particularly in Greek cities. Spatial exclusion: social, economic, environmental and cultural issues. Gender issues and anti-colonial approaches in Urban Geography.

 

Critical approaches of urban social, ecological, cultural and economic processes in several cities in the world. Focus on Europe (with emphasis in the Mediterranean space) and America (with emphasis in Latin American space).
