This course introduces students to some of the key themes, concepts and debates characterising Urban Geography. Among the topics covered initially are conceptualisations of the urban condition, human geography debates and theories of urbanisation. The course then focuses on urban geographies of the European and American cities.
Definitions : System of cities and structure of the city (urban models), Land use and Land occupation, Urbanisation and Suburbanisation. Interactions between urban phenomena and environment in several cities and particularly in Greek cities. Spatial exclusion: social, economic, environmental and cultural issues. Gender issues and anti-colonial approaches in Urban Geography.
Critical approaches of urban social, ecological, cultural and economic processes in several cities in the world. Focus on Europe (with emphasis in the Mediterranean space) and America (with emphasis in Latin American space).
