Learning Outcomes

The objective of the course is the examination of regional development and spatial planning at a theoretical and methodological level, as well as at the level of applied policy in Greece and the EU. It is expected that by the end of the course the students will have developed a comprehensive and systematic knowledge of

  • the basic theoretical approaches to spatial planning,
  •  
    the analysis of methodology, mechanisms and institutions of regional policy and spatial planning,
  •  
    the basic directions, institutions and tools of sustainable development and spatial planning in both Greece and the EU.

(3) Syllabus

1. Space and planning –basic concepts. 2. The social and political context of spatial planning (state and planning: theoretical approaches – social and political dimensions of spatial planning). 3. Principles, directions, processes and agencies of spatial planning. Methodology of spatial planning. 4. Space and spatial planning in the EU (the specificities of European space – the European project and planning process – regional disparities and spatial planning – the territorial cooperation – the European Spatial Development Perspective (ESDP) – ESPON and territorial agenda – new developments and prospects for European spatial development and planning. 5. Space and planning in Greece (settlement system, metropolitan and rural space – the evolution of regional policy and spatial planning in Greece – contemporary conditions and prospects of sustainable development and spatial planning in Greece).
