(2) Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

The goal of this course is to explore the EU, its institutions and policies, providing a thorough and in-depth understanding of the difficulties, dilemmas and challenges of the integration process. In this context, the particularity of the southern European member states is highlighted and discussed.

 

In the theoretical part, the course examines the respective literature unearthing the vibrant debates that structured developments in the EU, from the treaty of Rome to current monetary union impasses. Subsequently, EU spatial policies are explored, the development of which is critically presented in light of the contingent socio-political context. Particular emphasis is placed on the agricultural, regional and spatial development policies.

 

In the seminars’ part, students are asked to choose and develop a relevant to the course theme that is of interest to them. The organized presentation of these topics intents to involve students in a lively dialogue, engaging them actively in the course. By the end of this course students would be familiar with the concrete aspects and procedures of EU policies, also being capable το critically approach their goals.

  • Approaching the EU: Space, society and the economy.
  • European integration: from the Treaty of Rome to the latest Accessions Treaties.
  • The institutional and the political structure of the EU.
  • The Single European Act and the Maastricht Treaty.
  • The Common Market and the Monetary Union.
  • The creation of a European economic space and uneven regional development.
  • EU cohesion and convergence policies, centring on Greece and the Mediterranean.
  • The latest ‘enlargement’ wave: Central and Eastern Europe.
  • Spatial policy
  • Trans-European, Transportation and Telecommunications Networks.
  • Metropolitan centres and the role of Greek cities in the emerging European urban system.
  • Common Agricultural Policy.
  • Social policy.

Student Performance Evaluation
Tutor-guided coursework submitted at various stages during term-time. Assignments allow students to demonstrate knowledge and understanding on a focused part of the syllabus. The final course assessment is based on the students' overall seminar presence (preparation for each seminar, discussions participation, quality of presentations), with a stronger weighting (70%) given to a final written exam.
