(2) Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

The basic aim of this course is to apply the theory and methodology of Geographical Education to the students and acquire the understanding and features of teaching and learning geography in Secondary education.

More specifically after the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • Know the basic principles and theories related to the teaching and learning of Geography
  • Understand the factors that influence and affect the teaching and learning of Geography in Greek Education
  • Acquire the understanding and features of teaching and learning geography with appropriate approaches
  • Know about alternative ideas/ misconceptions of students and take them into account when planning their teaching
  • Develop students’ teaching and learning methods about geographical issues within an holistic framework
  • Recognize and appreciate the value of the teamwork’s implementation in the classroom
  • Prepare and present a lesson plan or didactical scenario, implementing innovative teaching methods and strategies, applying appropriate activities
  • Develop and use appropriate educational resources for teaching and learning geography
  • Organize, prepare and teach a geography lesson in school and produce lesson plans work sheets and assessment sheets
  • Reflect on and evaluate their teaching

  • Teaching geography and learning theories (the Pedagogical and Psychological aspects of Geographical education)
  • Teaching geography strands and themes and school geography (the aims and objectives of school geography)
  • The status of geography in the Greek school curriculum: an historical overview 1834-today
  • Geography curricula (aims, objectives, content, methods, learning outcomes and evaluation)
  • Spatial thinking: Geographical skills
  • Teaching and learning with maps
  • Teaching and learning geography through problem solving, inquiry, fieldwork and projects
  • Students’ misconceptions for geo - sciences and constructive teaching method - Students’ Learning in geography
  • Teaching geography for a sustainable world
  • Developing and using resources for teaching and learning in geography
  • Teaching and learning geography using ICT
  • Principles of students’ and teaching assessment (examples)

Student Performance Evaluation
Summative evaluation. 40% Teaching Practicum and 60% from final written examinations. At the beginning of the semester, all relevant information regarding the teaching practicum in schools and required deliverables is made available to students through the course site on eClass.
