Learning Outcomes

The main goal of the course is students to develop scientific knowledge in the theories and applications of didactics in secondary school

    More specifically after the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • recognize the basic principles and theories related to teaching and learning
  • classify the factors that influence teaching and learning and relate them to the educational policy and the context in which it takes place
  • distinguish the differences between teaching methods and strategies
  • define the teaching phases according to the method
  • apply the appropriate teaching method according to the course
  • understand the role of curriculum resources in effective teaching interventions
  • design and develop a teaching scenario by implementing specific strategies, selecting appropriate activities, educational material and supervisory tools
  • present an integrated course plan and relate categories of objectives with learning outcomes
  • identify types of evaluation and plan an evaluation
  • get the opportunity to observe, describe, reflect on and analyse students teaching as well as their own teaching
  • εvaluate and appreciate teachers’ role in students’ effective learning
  • recognize the value of collaborative teaching and integrate it into the practice of teaching

  • Concept and purpose of didactics. Didactics through the centuries: Teaching and learning theories from Greek antiquity to the 21st century
 
  • Basic Principles and Theories of teaching and learning. Contemporary theories of learning
 
  • Goals, Aims and Objectives in Education
 
  • Education policy and curriculum. Basic concepts of curriculum and programme development - Planning content, sequence and structure used for different subjects and teaching methods, Content selection criteria
 
  • The strategy of teaching practice - Modern teaching models and strategies
 
  • The Planning - Design - Implementation and Evaluation of Teaching and Learning
 
  • Theory, practice, understanding and utilisation of educational evaluation: Forms of evaluation and theoretical models; Evaluation of teaching and teacher’s appraisal; Programme evaluation; External and School self-evaluation, assessment of students’ knowledge, skills and attitudes: Purposes of assessment; Formative and summative models of assessment; Test construction, etc)
 
  • Educational materials: Types of educational materials. Criteria for choice and use of educational materials
 
  • The modern teacher: His role and effectiveness.

Student Performance Evaluation
Formative (Practice in School ) and Summative evaluation  (Final Written exams). 40% from written lesson plans and teaching hours assignment (during the whole semester)   60% from final written exams  (with multiple choice and Short Answer Questions)   Assessment criteria are referred in the department’s curriculum and in the course site on eclass.        In the beginning of the semester all the details about the practice in school and deliverables are accessible to the students (number of school attendance and teaching hours, dates, assessment criteria), from the course web page on eclass.
