The laboratory of Economic Geography, Regional Development and Spatial Planning aimς to develop basic and applied research in both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the main divisions of the Department of Geography: (a) economic geography, (b) regional development and spatial planning (Greece, EU), (c) planning and developing new innovation fields, (d) contributing to the local development, improving economic networking and planning. The research will be implemented through the laboratory with various competitive research programmes, and also through post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral dissertations and furthermore from the combination of all of the above. Among the main activities of the lab will be the teaching and research seminars, aiming also to contribute towards the knowledge in the main fields of economic and human geography, planning and development.

The laboratory has been established in accordance to the Law: 1268/82 article 7 § 6 and the current statements of national Laws, regarding higher education and research laboratories for insularity and local development.

One of the main targets of the laboratory is to contribute towards the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development. Moreover, it aimis to contribute in the research and especially in dissertations and also the Ph.D theses in all of the above fields. Finally, the laboratory aims to contribute towards research programmes and scientific publications.

Another important task of the laboratory is to develop the networking using new innovations and e-learning facilities and also to develop the international-collaborations with participation through international network-schemes, such as teaching-research collaborations, Erasmus networks etc.

The laboratory also aims to focus in the research fields of human and economic, spatial planning and development targeting to participate and to develop the research and scientific activities through international collaborations, European research programmes etc.

Also, one of the main targets of laboratory is to organize and develop a series of scientific seminars for both graduate, undergraduates and post-graduate students in the fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development.

The Laboratory also aims to support the research scientists (both Ph.D and post-doctoral) in the fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development.

The Laboratory also aims to organize international conferences and workshops and to invite scientists in the fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development.

To collaborate and to publish the International Journal of Regional Socio-Economic Issues in both print and online editions: Journal of regional & socio-economic issues (Print) ISSN 2049-1395 and (Online) ISSN 2049-1409

To create a database of regional, socio-economic and spatial data in order to support and participate in various research and scientific programmes of the laboratory and furthermore to establish collaborations with international databases. Moreover, the laboratory aims to create an international database including information and literature in the scientific fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development, useful for both students and research scientists.

Finally the laboratory aims to establish a network with local governmental bodies, scientific-research and social organizations in European and Mediterranean area, aiming to promote the education, research and scientific knowledge in the fields of human development, geography and also in the fields of spatial planning and development, in order to contribute towards local development.
